Sacramento authorities are examining a gun violence incident that erupted on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area as deputies were dispersing an unauthorized event of multiple hundreds of people.
Prior to the Shooting
Deputies first arrived at the park on Howe Avenue just after half past six in the evening after getting calls of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Following that, a follow-up call was made mentioning a possible physical fight occurring near the park.
A sheriff's airship scanned the area from the air but reported no active disturbance. Despite this, deputies found that a massive group had packed into the park without permission.
The Shooting Itself
Responding units started clearing the unauthorized gathering by surrounding the park and making announcements ordering attendees to disperse at once. Around 15 minutes were provided for individuals to vacate.
At the height of the dispersal effort that upwards of 20 gunshots echoed through the night. The sudden gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Responding personnel swiftly started finding those who had been shot.
Four People Shot
Ultimately, four people were identified as having gunshot wounds. The four individuals — made up of one woman and three men each apparently in their twenties — were rushed to local Sacramento hospitals. Medical personnel stated that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one person's injuries were considered minor. Fortunately, all four were in stable condition.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District assisted at the location and provided medical assistance shooting victims at the park.
Physical Evidence
The bulk of the shooting was confirmed to have unfolded adjacent to the Cottage Way side of the park alongside the local Home Depot situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Law enforcement investigators found additional shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Home Depot Sacramento shooting Bullet damage were discovered in the iron fence surrounding the nearby Home Depot. These findings pointed to that at least one of the shooters had been shooting in a southerly direction from the Cottage Way area targeting the Home Depot store. That Home Depot location was temporarily locked down during the incident. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives worked tirelessly late into the evening.
Suspect Information
Intelligence received over scanner radio traffic showed that a Kia had been detained in an area within Solano County. Four individuals were taken into custody. Sheriff's units were sent to retrieve the detainees to bring the suspects back for formal questioning. Video reviewed at the scene confirmed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
